Safe and flexible testing

The majority of tests are taken digitally. This leads to a high demand for test workstations. And preferably flexible test workstations too, so that expensive rooms remain available for other activities.

Flexible testing can be done via institution-managed laptops and chromebooks, but also via BYOD (the student's own laptop). For part of the tests (about 10%) it is desirable to be able to switch to additional software. During the test, the student can then access other applications from the test platform, for example to make calculations, code or drawings.

Application testing: switching to other applications during the test

Together with the SIG Digital Testing, we mapped out what a virtual test workplace, where the student can switch to other applications (such as Excel or Matlab) during the test, could look like. This is technically possible. The challenge is to make it scalable and link it flexibly with other systems and keep the costs manageable.Read more about it in the report.

Online proctoring

Online proctoring is a form of location-independent digital test-taking, where surveillance takes place online, using special software. To inform institutions about online proctoring, SURF produced a whitepaper on online proctoring. SURF also developed a website for students with information on online proctoring.
