Privacy speech 2024: Sex work in a digital world

Sex workers were perhaps the first real pioneers of the Internet, argues sex worker and activist Yvette Luhrs. The digital shift brought physical safety and independence. But also a downside: remaining truly anonymous online is almost impossible. In the Privacy speech 2024, Yvette shares their unique perspective on privacy, safety and online identity.

Balancing safety and privacy

Sex work is governed by a great deal of oversight and regulation. How do you navigate this? How do you guard the balance between (online) safety and privacy? How is our society changing as sex increasingly takes place in the digital world? Recognisable issues for anyone. Using various anecdotes, musings and scenes, Yvette takes you through a stimulating story about sex work and privacy.

About Yvette Luhrs

Yvette Luhrs (1985) is a Dutch sex worker, expert, activist, pornographer and webcam performer. In 2010, Luhrs specialised in pornography, a theme that was central to their art studies. They combined this with media studies and gained experience in front of and behind the camera, working for national and international companies. Luhrs has actively campaigned for sex workers' rights since 2014. They is also the founder of the online platform Ugly Mugs, where sex workers can report aggressive clients to alert colleagues.

About the Privacy Speech

The Privacyrede provides a platform for individuals who take an innovative look at the social impact of technology. The Privacyrede is an annual event organised by SETUP and SURF, in collaboration with Pakhuis de Zwijger. This is the ninth edition. Whereas in the first editions, we looked at the state of privacy, we are now zooming out a bit more. How does new technology help, guide or restrict us? SURF has been committed to protecting privacy when using technology for years and is therefore a proud co-organiser of the Privacy Speech.
