Connect to NetherLight
Check who is connected
First, check whether the parties you want to connect with can be reached via NetherLight. It may be that the party you want to connect with is behind one of the target networks. You can inquire about this with the party concerned, but NetherLight can also help you with this. Mail to klantsupport@surf.nl.
Find out what co-location facilities are needed
If you need space for your equipment, contact Interxion or Equinix AM7 colocation services. They can inform you about the facilities they offer for this purpose.
Install a fibre connection
The fibre connections for your connection should terminate at one of NetherLight's locations. These are:
- Interxion, Amsterdam, the Netherlands
- Equinix AM7, Kuiperbergweg 13, 1101 AE Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Supported connection technologies
Your equipment must support one of these connection technologies:
- Optical 1000BASE-LX (1310 nm)
- Optical 1000BASE-SX (850 nm)
- Optical 10GBASE-LR (1310 nm LAN PHY)
- Optical 100GBASE-LR4
- Optical 100GBASE-CWDM4
- Optical 400GBASE-FR4
- Optical 400GBASE-LR4
When the physical connection is established, you can request one or more interconnections to other connected parties. The interconnection is a connection within NetherLight's equipment that enables a EVPN-connection to be established between the parties. An interconnection is requested as follows:
- For an interconnection between two or more connected parties, all parties involved must agree to the initiator's request for interconnection.
- Once connected to NetherLight, send interconnection requests to klantsupport@surf.nl.
- When the EVPN is established, the NetherLight NOC notifies the connected parties that the EVPN can be put into use.
To use NetherLight please send an e-mail to karin.wessel@surf.nl. We will contact you for a technical check. During this check your technical staff works together with NetherLight staff. They discuss the technical realisation of your connection with NetherLight.
Connection agreement
We then send you NetherLight's connection agreement. Sign and send the connection agreement. Only after signing this agreement can the realisation of your connection be started. Have a look at the NetherLight connection agreement template (pdf). The NetherLight NOC will contact you to agree on the details and planning of your connection.
Service Level Specification
NetherLight's Service Level Specification (SLS) is intended as a reference for users and ict-managers about our service. The SLS defines service parameters, such as performance indicators, which only relate to NetherLight's service domain.

Already connected to a participating network?
If you already have a connection to a network connected to NetherLight, you may also be able to set up a connection via this network. Your own connection to NetherLight is then not necessary. For example, educational and research institutions connected to the SURF network can connect directly to a party participating in NetherLight via a Multi Service Port (MSP). View the overview of NetherLight participants.
NetherLight connection fees
Rates for participating in NetherLight are:
- 1 Gbit/s connection: 250 euro per month, excluding VAT
- 10 Gbit/s-connection: 500 euro per month, excluding VAT
