Within XR, there are many practical examples of new ways of studying. In this way, students are further helped in practising practicals and real-life cases.
At Utrecht University, law students emerge from a classroom in their gowns. They practise pleading in a virtual environment. This way, they can practice their speaking skills in a realistic way and learn from each other. Their first reaction; 'what a cool experience!'
Students learn how to deal with fire with VR
Students from the Aviation Services course at Deltion College practise how to deal with a fire in an aircraft in a VR module.
Designing the ideal campus
In Mercator City, RUG Spatial Sciences students design their ideal Zernike Campus. Roads can be modified, buildings removed or added and social safety improved, without a spa going to ground.
Practising motivational interviewing with VR
The HAN has a VR module that allows students on care and social work courses to practise motivational interviewing.
Immersive rooms in education
Immersive rooms are on the rise in Dutch education. Several institutions have already gained interesting and valuable experience with the use of immersive rooms. SURF organised peer visits at four different institutions, where participants had the opportunity to experience an immersive room firsthand. VR makes preparing for and practising lab work feel lifelike
Students often find chemistry practicals daunting. A lot can go wrong, potentially leading to high costs and safety risks. Wageningen University & Research (WUR), in collaboration with the University of Groningen (RUG), developed a virtual chemistry lab, allowing students to practise first in virtual reality using a VR headset, as preparation for physical lab sessions.
