SURF tests maturity model for AI ethics
The maturity model, developed by the Ethical Data Science Association (EDSA), provides institutions with insights into their level of maturity in AI ethics. The model evaluates six key dimensions, such as awareness, policy, and development processes, and offers practical tools to promote responsible AI usage. In addition to helping tackle ethical issues in a structured manner, the model ensures compliance with regulations, such as the upcoming AI Act.
Structured approach
The pilot showed that a structured approach around AI ethics is essential. The maturity model proved to be an effective tool to support institutions in:
- Raising awareness and engagement within the organisation.
- Starting conversations about ethical issues.
- Shaping AI ethics strategies.
IInstitutions that participated in the pilot particularly appreciated the practical applicability of the model and the encouragement to critically assess internal processes.
Collaboration as the key to success
An important outcome of the pilot is the realisation that cooperation between institutions is indispensable. By sharing knowledge and experiences, institutions can tackle the challenges of AI ethics together. This collaboration not only strengthens the learning process, but also helps develop joint best practices.
Recommendations
The pilot highlights several important lessons:
- Include ethics structurally in the organisation's long-term strategy.
- Include ethical considerations already in the procurement and implementation of AI systems.
- Work together with other institutions to share knowledge and strengthen each other.
For SURF members, this model offers a concrete step towards a future in which AI can be deployed responsibly and ethically. By using the maturity model, institutions can not only grow internally, but also set an example for other organisations within and outside the sector.
