E-portfolios in practice

The focus on e-portfolios in digital testing and assessment is growing with the rise of programmatic testing. An e-portfolio is a means of tracking student development and recording learning outcomes and competences. We surveyed the use of e-portfolios at a number of institutions. You can read about the set-up below.

In the publication 'e-portfolios in highereducation' (SURF, 2023), we describe that e-portfolios fit well with Lifelong Learning and making student development more central. It turned out that there are still many uncertainties to the use of e-portfolios in higher education. For these reasons, SURF's Digital Testing and Assessment Working Group decided to investigate this further at several institutions using e-portfolios.

The interviews held at different institutions have been developed into case studies that answer the following questions:

  • What functionalities are needed at decentralised level to support test learning with an e-portfolio?
  • How are the functionalities within the e-portfolio organised centrally, both technically (embedding ecosystem) and organisationally?

Through these interviews, we will gain more insight into the use of e-portfolios at institutions and share this knowledge. We also investigate whether SURF can take actions to solve bottlenecks in the use of e-portfolios. The surveyed e-portfolios will be supplemented with real-life stories that we investigate further.
