Architecture

As an institution, you want to support your target group in the best possible way. To do this, your information provision must be in order. This can be done by working with architecture, which describes the relationship between facilities. With a common information strategy, we help institutions cooperate in setting up their information provision.

Cooperative facility architecture

Together with universities, colleges, mbo institutes, university medical centres and research institutes, we work on the best possible information provision. Cooperation in the field of architecture and working jointly with-and on-architecture makes it possible to better manage procurement, development and delivery of services in a cooperative context. In addition, this cooperation contributes to innovation and knowledge sharing. Through the Architecture Cooperative Facility, we support, encourage and develop cooperation in the field of architecture and working jointly with-and on- architecture.

Cloud Sourcing Strategy

In October 2024, we released the SURF Cloud Sourcing Strategy. It was prompted by growing concerns about dependence on large commercial cloud suppliers, especially from the US. Recent geopolitical developments have only increased those concerns.

Some of the risks mentioned in the Cloud Sourcing Strategy are now a reality, or threaten to become so. Consider, for instance, the removal of research data on the orders of a foreign president, the sidelining of independent regulators, or the impact on the affordability of cloud services in the event of a tariff war between providers. Such developments create a lot of uncertainty for our members, the industry and society as a whole.

What is our way forward?

To reduce dependence on large US parties, SURF is pushing for more balance: more use of sector and in-house cloud solutions, and collaboration with European parties and smaller providers. We look at what is needed per application, and take measures to reduce risks, such as separating data and application, the option to migrate data or testing exit strategies.

This does not involve us excluding commercial parties or banning cloud use. We do, however, want to avoid unwanted dependencies - from anyone. After all, independence of education and research is crucial for a healthy, free society.

What approach do we take?

The SURF Cloud Sourcing Strategy was set up as a multi-year process. This will not change. Nor does the content of the strategy require adjustment for the time being: the current risks are named in it, which means that the strategy provides the necessary handles. The current situation makes the application of the CSS more urgent than ever. As far as SURF is concerned, the line described has the highest priority. Together, we will ensure a future-proof and resilient sector.
