Update DDoS attack SURF network

There is currently no unusual traffic towards our network. Of course, the measures taken remain in place, and we continue to monitor the network closely. There were no problems last weekend either, as far as we know.

Last week, there was a major DDoS attack, targeting several places, geographically scattered on our network. By Friday afternoon, the attack had stopped.

We saw that the mitigating measures of Thursday 16 January had a positive effect. To avoid giving an advantage to the attackers, we cannot provide details about these measures.

A report has been filed with the police. We are also contributing to the NCSC's investigation into the origin of the attacks.

What is a DDoS attack?

A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack is a cyber attack in which a large amount of data traffic is sent to a computer or network with the aim of disrupting or shutting down the operation of a website, server or network.

Other attack

Large-scale attacks also occurred on 15 and 16 January. These attacks are much larger than the 'regular' DDoS attacks our network faces on a daily basis. Also, the traffic was at a point in our network where filtering was not (properly) possible. The organisation SURF itself also suffered from a delayed connection, so messages to relations did not arrive or arrived with a delay.

We are in close contact with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and are contributing to the NCSC's investigation into the origin of the attacks.
