New white paper on the impact of quantum communications on education and research

Quantum communication offers unprecedented possibilities for the security and reliability of digital infrastructures. But what does this mean for education and research? In our new white paper, we provide insight into the principles, applications and global developments of quantum communication.

The white paper ‘Introducing the concept of quantum communication’ is aimed at anyone who does not work with quantum technology on a daily basis, but wants to understand its impact.

Advances in quantum technology

Global attention for quantum technology is growing, as recognised by UNESCO's ‘International Year of Quantum’ in honour of 100 years of quantum mechanics. Quantum technology has already led to innovations such as lasers, transistors and atomic clocks, and quantum communication is expected to play a key role in data security and the digital infrastructure of the future. Given the expected value of quantum technology in the coming years, we at SURF want to make use of it as early as possible and allow research and education in the Netherlands to benefit from it.

White paper: impact of quantum communication

In the white paper, we explain quantum technology in an understandable way, emphasising the added value of quantum communication for education and research. The document offers:

  • an accessible explanation of the basic principles of quantum communication
  • an overview of initiatives concerning quantum communication in the Netherlands and the EU
  • an exploration of worldwide developments concerning this subject
  • insight into the influence of quantum communication on the future of education and research

Preparing for the future

Quantum technology is developing at lightning speed, and its impact will be felt in the way we protect, send and process data. By gaining insight into this technology now, educational and research institutions can better prepare for the future.
