New strategy for use of cloud services in education and research

How do you make the most of the possibilities of the cloud, without losing control and autonomy? SURF is introducing a new cloud strategy to help education and research institutions use cloud services safely and responsibly, while retaining control over your data. The strategy has been developed in close cooperation with our members.

"This is essential to secure the future of education and research," says our CEO a.i. Ron Augustus. "We want to help institutions make the most of the cloud without losing control and autonomy."

Balance between innovation and control

Although more and more institutions are deploying commercial cloud services, this also brings challenges, such as dependence on large technology companies and the loss of control over valuable data. Our Cloud Sourcing Strategy helps institutions make conscious choices so they can strike a balance between using commercial cloud services and maintaining control over their own infrastructure and data.

Collaboration for future-proof cloud environments

We aim for a level playing field for both European and US cloud providers. We also encourage cooperation within the industry and with supply chain partners, suppliers and government to create a secure and future-proof cloud environment. After all, many of the challenges around cloud use are not only within education and research, but throughout society.
