Control data and plagiarism with new service ShareControl
ShareControl allows you to share data with plagiarism scan providers, without losing control of the data. ShareControl unlocks the data from your learning management system or other source. You decide which data to share, with whom and for how long.
Control by institutions: three advantages of ShareControl
- You decide with which plagiarism scan suppliers you share data. You also set retention periods yourself, per item or for several items simultaneously.
- Your data is collected in ShareControl and not at the plagiarism scan supplier. This allows you to give another plagiarism scan supplier access to the same data. So no vendor lock-in.
- You can also share your data with a plagiarism scan provider that your institution does not use but other institutions do. This allows you to compare student work from other institutions with your own.
Background: what went wrong?
Your LMS (learning management system) contains student work. It is important that this student work is checked for plagiarism. Therefore, you give permission to a plagiarism scan provider to check the student work within your LMS.
This way of offering data for plagiarism scan has some drawbacks:
- Once the student work is with the supplier, you lose track of the data.
- If other institutions use a different plagiarism scan supplier, the student work may not be included in a shared database. As a result, student work from different institutions is not compared.
- When migrating to another plagiarism scan supplier, you cannot be sure that all student work will be transferred.
- If a new supplier develops a good plagiarism scan product, you cannot use it because the new supplier has not yet built a database. The lack of that data means you cannot compare student work from your institution with the work of other institutions. Thus, new suppliers have no chance and there is no competition and market forces.
How does ShareControl solve these problems?
To regain control of student data to institutions, ShareControl has been developed. From ShareControl, you give permission to share student work with plagiarism scan suppliers. This way, you keep control of the data yourself. Because you give permission to share student work with plagiarism scan suppliers, student work can be compared with student work from another institution, even if that institution uses a different plagiarism scan product. A broader plagiarism scan makes it more likely to detect plagiarism.
You decide in ShareControl how long and to whom you make which data available. We also use ShareControl to link your LMS with the SURF services CopyrightCheck and Sharekit. This way, we only need to link once. This is safer and more efficient. This way, the control of the data no longer lies with the suppliers, but with the institution. You choose which data you want to make available.
