DDoS attack SURF network halted

Since 8.20 am this morning, there was another major DDoS attack, targeting several locations, geographically scattered on our network. Meanwhile, the attack has stopped again.

We have seen that the mitigating measures have had a positive effect. To avoid giving an advantage to the attackers, we cannot provide details about these measures.
We will continue to monitor the network closely this weekend.

A report has been filed with the police. We are also contributing to the NCSC's investigation into the origin of the attacks.

What is a DDoS attack?

A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack is a cyber attack in which a large amount of data traffic is sent to a computer or network with the aim of disrupting or shutting down the operation of a website, server or network.

Other attack

Large-scale attacks also occurred on 15 and 16 January. These attacks are much larger than the 'regular' DDoS attacks our network faces on a daily basis. Also, the traffic was at a point in our network where filtering was not (properly) possible. The organisation SURF itself also suffered from a delayed connection, so messages to relations did not arrive or arrived with a delay.

We are in close contact with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and are contributing to the NCSC's investigation into the origin of the attacks.

We understand that the situation is causing a lot of inconvenience and are doing our utmost to keep the network available.
